Stoney and Reata Moving Cow Calf Pairs

A couple of our cowdogs, Stoney and Reata, moving our first calf heifer pairs to fresh pasture.
You might notice we also have a few older cows in with them. They were brought in from the main herd for special care, then turned out with these 2 yr olds so we could keep a close eye on them.
It was just one of those beautiful kind of mornings, so I thought I would share some of it with you!

Reata Sorting Training Calves

Here David and Reata are sorting off some cattle to use for training some younger dogs.
Although David could work the young dogs in the corral, he enjoys setting up them up like this because it allows our older dogs to feel like they have a job and it keeps them in practice for ranch work.

We really like Reata for how she dog breaks cattle in a very low stress way, even though she does like to grab a nose from time to time. The cattle learn very quickly to move off of her pressure, and more importantly she teaches them not to be runaways.

Cowdogs Work as Ranch Hands – Stoney, Annie and Reata

Come along with Reata, Annie and Stoney as we move the cattle to fresh pasture. There is plenty of action packed in this video, with run away cattle, a run away dog, and more. Not everything goes perfect, but we had fun, and we got the job done!

Moving the cattle is not always as simple as opening a gate to the next pasture. For this move we have to cross through intersecting pastures, gates, and roads. There is only one right way for the cattle to go to get there, and it is up to us to guide them.

Stoney is a 15 month old Registered Hangin Tree Cowdog, and Reata and Annie are both Supreme Qualified Hangin Tree Cowdogs. David Dagley has been training them to help gather and move cattle, and they are turning out to be exceptional ranch hands!

Some people wonder why we move our cattle so often.
By dividing the ranch into small pastures, we can move cattle to a new pasture every few days. That way the cattle not only eat their fill of fresh grass, but they also trample the grass creating a mat to protect and feed the soil.
Our cowdogs have made it easier to move our cattle more often, improving both the nutrition and weight gain of the cattle, and also allowing the land to rest most of the year, improving the soil and encouraging the growth of native grasses.
In this video we have helping us two of our registered Hangin Tree Cowdogs, Dagley’s Annie and Dagley’s Reata.
