Teaching a Cowdog to Gather Cattle

When teaching a dog to gather cattle, we start in a smaller pen. First we teach them to stay on the opposite side of the stock as the handler. (called “balancing”) We also encourage them to group the stock, and not cut through the middle.

Then, once they can gather and group a small amount of cattle in  the corral, we move on to bigger groups in the pasture.

Here David needed to take all the cattle to show them where the water tank is in a new pasture. So, he is using it as an opportunity to teach Reata how to gather a bigger group of cattle.

He drove through the herd, so he could push her out to the farthest cattle. Then he gradually has her gather little groups and join them to the main group. Eventually they get them all trailing to the water tank.

Dagley’s Reata is 13 months old in this video. This is her second time learning to gather in a bigger pasture.
